Hey Young World media, call letters WHYW, was founded in 2017 so that Advantage Lancaster’s students could learn the behind-the-scenes of creating engaging interest stories, announcements, and interviews in the community.

Young people are woefully underrepresented in today’s media, and our national newsrooms are not beacons of diversity and inclusion. WHYW exposes students to the nuts and bolts of the news creation process, from finding stories to interviewing key people to scripting teleprompters to editing raw footage. Financial support from our partners and sponsors has allowed us to assemble a fully functional newsroom with cameras, computers, editing software, and more.

Enrollees in our program cover everything from Edward Hand interests like sports games and student activities to Lancaster-wide events like the Extra Give. Our students have produced stories on such local celebrities as Mayor Danene Sorace to Representative Mike Sturla to members of the Lancaster County Community Foundation for the annual Extraordinary Give.

As our students hone their expertise, WHYW intends to launch a podcast in the near future so that they can practice drafting and editing an audio narratives.
